As Mayor Rahm Emanuel reaches his second anniversary leading the City of Chicago, our “city in a garden” reflects on dramatic progress and continuing efforts to make Chicago one of the most competitive, livable, and environmentally sustainable places on the planet.
This month’s issue of Cities Today – a global magazine designed for influential policymakers in the urban development space – features an in-depth article about the C40 BRT Network, which promotes development and deployment of Bus Rapid Transit in cities across the globe.
The City of Sydney has announced plans for a revitalized city center, starting with a project that will remove cars from congested main thoroughfare and transform the area into a spacious plaza, complete with trees and pedestrians. But that won’t mean commuters will have to pick an alternate route – the plaza is part of a larger light rail project by the NSW Government, which will make Sydney more accessible by public transit while making the city greener.
C40 City Barcelona is making strides toward providing its walkers and cyclists with a world-class green belt above the city. Passeig de les Aigües, as the pathway is called, received a 620,000 euro grant to enact such improvements as installing gutters to catch stormwater runoff, building underground water passages to prevent erosion, and compacting and strengthening the road itself to inhibit landslides.
As one of the world’s first megacities, and the original C40 city, London has literally paved the way for innovative strategies to transport and house its ever-growing population.
